Wild Frontier

Explore Sable Plains River Lodge — our wilder sibling, just 20 minutes from Sable Plains and perched right on the legendary Limpopo River. From firearms training, anti-poaching patrols, self-defence courses, advanced animal tracking to selective hunting, top-notch butchery, bush braais, farm-to-table cooking, tractor rides, and unforgettable nights in an open boma surrounded by free-roaming wildlife — these are not mere activities. They are life-changing, skill-building adventures that let you leave a mark on a landscape and a legacy on a continent.

ONGOING PROJECTS

This project focuses on growing citizen science documentation across the Western Waterberg, covering the Matlabas and Crocodile Rivers, a stretch of the Limpopo River, and several key conservation areas. Large parts of this region remain poorly studied, leaving critical knowledge gaps about the species that live here. By encouraging the public to record what they see, the project will generate much-needed biodiversity data, highlight rare and threatened species, and reveal the true richness of this unique landscape.

Sable Plains is more than a reserve — it is a shared commitment to the land and the people who live alongside it.

Our ongoing community outreach includes:

Establishing a foot-and-mouth disease sanitation station on the main road to protect local livestock

Organizing clean-up days in our nearest town to keep the environment healthy for all
Running anti-poaching training sessions with community members and rangers
Providing firefighting support during the dry season to protect homes, farms and wildlife habitat
Planning future mobile medical services for the community (currently in development)

These are not one-off gestures — they are long-term partnerships that strengthen food security, education, safety and opportunity for everyone who calls this landscape home.When the land thrives, so do the people — and so does the future of the Big 5.

At Sable Plains, adult education is a cornerstone of our ongoing commitment to the people and the land. We provide hands-on training in practical skills such as welding, plumbing, electrical work, and car repairs, empowering our staff and local community members with tools for long-term independence. Trainees not only gain confidence and employable expertise but also become natural teachers, passing these valuable skills on to their relatives and neighbors back home. Through this ripple effect, we’re building stronger, more self-reliant families and fostering deeper trust and cooperation throughout the region.

At Sable Plains, our animal shelter provides a safe haven for injured wildlife, offering veterinary care, rehabilitation, and a quiet space to heal so they can one day return to the wild with a fighting chance.

We carefully monitor and protect the habitats of our resident baboon spiders — rare, ground-dwelling tarantulas that play a vital role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations and serving as an indicator of healthy soil and biodiversity.

To safeguard them, we have identified key locations across the reserve and created small, undisturbed micro-habitats with natural cover to support their survival and breeding.

This is an evolving, ongoing project — one more step in our commitment to preserving every layer of life that makes this wilderness thrive.

In corporation with neighboring farms and reserves, we deployed large amounts of cameras – both baited and on cross roads – to conduct a census of all the nocturnal predators roaming our area. Modern AI is used to identify individuals from the tens of thousands of pictures that are generated every month. We have identified several endangered species and are thrilled to increase our knowledge of the biodiversity in our region. Leopard, free-roaming cheetah, several species of hyenas, caracals, serval cats, civets, bat-eared foxes, genets, and African wild cat are among our regular visitors.

Through our project, we document species/individuals present and use the patterns of behaviour for our guests to have a chance to view these animals in the wild.

A common question we get is "When is the best time to visit?". The most important factor is rain and temperature. Click below to view the rain history in our area over the last 40 years! This helps to make an informed decision based on how wet you are willing to get. Remember, rain creates a more lush bush which means more hiding places for our wildlife, but a more spectacular setting.
